Understanding
As we’ve mentioned before, when David wrote Psalm 119 he used the Hebrew Aleph Bet to break it up into segments. Each segment represents a letter within the Aleph Bet and the first word begins with that letter it represents. David started Psalm 119 with the Aleph and ended with the Tav.
The section of Psalm 119 that we will read today is represented by the Hebrew letter Ayin. It’s numerical value is 70. This number represents the nations and this is how many lights were in the Temple Solomon built. It had ten menorahot and of course each had seven branches totaling seventy branches in all. So much could be said about this, but we’ll leave it here today. The Ayin in Ancient Paleo Hebrew was represented by an eye and it means to see, experience, have insight. When we see or have insight that is the same as having the Spirit of Understanding.
The first word in the Hebrew Scriptures for the our section we will read is the word for done and that is the Hebrew word in Strong’s 6213 עָשָׂה ‘âśâ a primitive root meaning; to do or make, in the broadest sense. When we belong to YHVH Elohim through receiving Yeshua as Messiah, we are now their servants and the way we walk this out is serving or doing what the Word calls for. Let’s read what David had to say with the concept of the Ayin/insight or understanding in mind and notice how many times he uses the phrase “your servant”.
Ayin
Psalm 119:121-128 says,
121 I have done [עָשָׂה asa] justice and righteousness; do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Be surety for Your servant for good [Tov]; do not let the arrogant oppress me.
123 My eyes fail with longing for Your salvation [Yeshua] and for Your righteous word.
124 Deal with Your servant according to Your lovingkindness and teach me Your statutes.
125 I am Your servant; give me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies.
126 It is time for YHVH to act, for they have broken Your law.
127 Therefore I love Your commandments above gold, yes, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I esteem right all Your precepts concerning everything, I hate every false way.
In 2 Samuel 7:18-29 says,
“18 Then David the king went in and sat before YHVH, and he said, “Who am I, O Master YHVH, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Master YHVH, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Master YHVH. 20 Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Master YHVH! 21 For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. [knowing and understanding are closely related] 22 For this reason You are great, O Master YHVH; for there is none like You, and there is no Elohim besides You, according to all that we have heard [Shema] with our ears. 23 And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom Elohim went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods? 24 For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O YHVH, have become their Elohim. 25 Now therefore, O YHVH Elohim, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken, 26 that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘YHVH of hosts is Elohim over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, O YHVH of hosts, the Elohim of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You. 28 Now, O Master YHVH, You are Elohim, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant. 29 Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Master YHVH, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”
What a powerful prayer David prayed following a request to build YHVH a permanent house on the earth. And although he was told he wouldn’t get to build it, he was also told his son Solomon after him would get to build it. Instead of getting angry, David understood and remembered that he is YHVH’s servant and as such it is YHVH’s name and ways that are to be made great the way He says it is to be done!! Thirteen times out of the twenty verses we selected, David told YHVH, “I am Your Servant.” May we, like David, have the Spirit of Understanding that we, too, are YHVH’s servant’s and therefore we are to do what He says to do and we can trust His blessings will come as a result.
Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
