Understanding
When the disciples awakened on this particular day they had no idea what they were about to encounter. They knew they would be ministering with Yeshua somewhere, but they were not prepared for what was about to take place. A crowd had seen Yeshua and the disciples going on a boat and ran ahead of them on foot and gathered together. When Yeshua saw this gathering He felt compassion for them because, as Mark 6:34 puts it, “They were like sheep without a shepherd.” So He went ashore and began to teach them many things.
As He was teaching it becomes quite late and the disciples get very concerned about their desolate location and the need for the people to be let go so that they can go buy for themselves something to eat. Yeshua tells them “You give them something to eat.” They ask about feeding them through buying food for the crowd. Yeshua is now about to teach them a lesson in provision and faith from our Creator.
He asks them how many loaves do you have? Notice what their response was, “Five loaves and two fish.” This was going above and beyond by giving everything they had, not just the loaves that Yeshua asked about, but the fish as well.
Then an amazing thing happens, the five loaves and two fish multiplied enough to feed five thousand men, not counting the women and children who ate. (Matthew 14:21) After this event is where we pick up the verses we’re going to look at today.
Mark 6:45-52 says,
45 Immediately Yeshua made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
46 After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
47 When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
48 Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.” [Connect to Exodus 14:13-14 when the children were at the Red Sea before them and Pharaoh and his army were gaining behind them. Moses says, “13 Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of YHVH which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. 14 YHVH will fight for you while you keep silent.”]
51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
52 for they had not gained any insight [Understanding] from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened [heart was dull or calloused to see or understand what was right before them].
To completely forget the mighty works of YHVH immediately following a miraculous event is nothing new for Israel. The disciples totally let what the Spirit of Understanding would have desired to impart to them through the feeding of the five thousand plus people pass them by without gaining the understanding that was intended for them. As we’ve said before, learning from the Word “what not to do” is as important as learning “what to do”. May we gain insight from the failure of the disciples to see or understand with spiritual eyes that which we are supposed to understand. Things happen supernaturally in the natural realm to teach us faith and trust in our Mighty Elohim. May our hearts be pliable and not hardened, so we can receive the important truths.
Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
