28th May 2024: Our Daily deLIGHT~3rd Day-Counsel
Counsel
In preparing today’s deLIGHT I was taken to Proverbs. As I read through the verses below I pondered the frame of reference Solomon would be coming from when penning those verses. He was a wise man whose father was King David the great warrior. War was all too familiar to him. He understood that one does not have power or strength within himself to win the wars or battles that life brings. He knows from experience that it takes us being joined to one another.
I thought it would be helpful to understand the premise of the author of the book of Proverbs before we read our verses for today, so I’ve inserted what The NASB Inductive Study Bible has written at the beginning of the book. “When Elohim appeared to King Solomon in a dream, He said, “Ask what you wish Me to give you.” Solomon asked for an understanding heart so that he could lead the nation of Israel (See 1 Kings 3). In response to that prayer, “Elohim gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men…He also spoke 3,000 proverbs” (1 Kings 4:29-32).”
In 1 Kings 3:9 Solomon also asks for the ability “to judge Your people to discern between good and evil.” In our culture we are in desperate need to yield to the Spirit of Counsel so that we can make righteous choices between good and evil and not lean to our own carnal inclinations/counsel.
Proverbs 24:5-6. “5. A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increases power. 6. For by wise guidance [Spirit of Counsel] you will wage war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.”
Proverbs 20:18; “18. Prepare plans by consultation, and make war by wise guidance.”
Though the verses above are talking about physical war the pattern is there for spiritual warfare. If we take the wisdom and counsel of these two verses and surround ourselves with wise counsel, we can have victory in the battles and decisions we face in life.
Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
