Understanding
Have you ever wondered why wisdom is personified as a woman? In the Hebrew wisdom is a feminine noun. What is interesting is that understanding is often paired with wisdom and it is a masculine noun. We know that it takes a male and a female to reproduce; not only is this true in mankind, but we also see this in the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom. We know from Scripture that it is first the natural then the spiritual; therefore, we also need both male and female in the body of Messiah if we’re going to reproduce the kingdom of YHVH. Taking all of this in, we can see a pattern that when we pray to understand wisdom, then apply it in our lives, we have both the male and female working together, which then reproduces the fruit of righteousness. Today we will examine some verses in order to gain a better understanding of the Father’s desire for our heart to be right before Him.
Proverbs 8:1-6 says,
1 Does not wisdom call, and understanding lift up her voice?
2 On top of the heights beside the way, where the paths meet, she [Wisdom] takes her stand;
3 Beside the gates, at the opening to the city, at the entrance of the doors, she [Wisdom] cries out:
4 “To you, O men, I [Wisdom] call, and my [Wisdom] voice is to the sons of men.
5 “O naive ones, understand prudence; and, O fools, understand wisdom.
6 “Listen, for I [Wisdom] will speak noble things; and the opening of my [Wisdom] lips will reveal right things.”
Proverbs 20:24 says, “Man’s steps are ordained by YHVH, how then can man understand his way?”
Proverbs 16:1-2 says, “1 The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from YHVH. [We may have thoughts and plans concerning our lives, but what we should really think and do is that which YHVH says should be done.] 2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but YHVH weighs the motives.
In context with YHVH knowing the heart, let’s see a pattern in Scripture in order to understand the way our Creator thinks versus the way we think. The prophet Samuel was sent to the house of Jesse for the revealing of the king that YHVH had chosen. Let’s read Samuel’s thoughts and YHVH’s response when Jesse’s first son, Eliab, was brought before him. 1 Samuel 16:6-7 says, “6 When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely YHVH’s anointed is before Him.” 7 But YHVH said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for Elohim sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but YHVH looks at the heart.”
Things are not always as they seem. The Spirit of Understanding is needed in our lives so that we can make sound judgments and properly discern beyond that which is seen, to get to the truth which is often in the unseen. Taking the time to inquire of YHVH to give us His understanding in any given situation can spare us from making wrong decisions that ultimately find us striving against the Spirit.
Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
