Wisdom
Continuing from the “Thirty Sayings of the Wise” in the book of Proverbs, we will focus on “Not Mingling”.
Saying Number 30: Proverbs 24:21-22; “21 My son, fear YHVH and the king; do not associate with those who are given to change, 22 For their calamity will rise suddenly, and who knows the ruin that comes from both of them?” [“Given to change” in other versions say, “do not join with rebellious officials”, “don’t associate with rebels” (remember the story of Korah in Numbers 16), but the literal translation is “Mingle not yourself”.
Psalm 106 is a great overview of the history of Israel’s rebellion and YHVH’s deliverance up to the point of that writing. I want to highlight a few of the verses. Psalm 106:10-12 concerning the account of the exodus out of Egypt, “10 So He [YHVH] saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy [Pharaoh and his army.]. 11 The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. 12 Then they believed His words; they sang His praise.”
After this mighty deliverance took place look what happens next. Psalm 106:13; “They quickly forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel,” It goes onto recount that they worshipped YHVH through the golden calf which was mingling the worship of Egypt with YHVH.
Psalm 106:35-36, 39 says, “35 But they mingled with the nations and learned their practices, 36 And served their idols, which became a snare to them. 39 ” Thus they became unclean in their practices, and played the harlot in their deeds.”
Deuteronomy 12:29-31 says, “29 When YHVH your Elohim cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, 30 beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 “You shall not behave thus toward YHVH your Elohim [mingle our worship], for every abominable act which YHVH hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.”
Numbers 33:55-56 says, “55 ‘But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall come about that those whom you let remain of them will become as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land in which you live. 56 ‘And as I plan to do to them, so I will do to you.’” There are many patterns in Scripture that show forth that if we mingle with those who are opposed to the ways of Yah or have been marked by Him, what’s intended for them will come to us. I will list just a few of the references for your reading. Leviticus 20:1-5, Numbers 16 with the story of Korah, Joshua 23:1-13 (especially 12&13) & Revelation 18:4. As we’re reading Scripture day to day, may we pay attention to the commands given to the people of Elohim and the consequences of not obeying. We will discover that it’s often the same outcome that’s intended for those we were told not to mingle with. Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived besides Yeshua, thought he was strong enough to manage staying true even though he disobeyed the commandments and multiplied wives to himself among the foreigners. This was not the case, it was his downfall that led to other rebellion. None of us are strong enough to stay true to the truth while mingling with that we’re commanded to leave alone.
Deuteronomy 28:1-14 is full of the blessings that come with obedience. Yeshua said in Luke 11:28; “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear [Shema: hear with the intent to obey.] the word of Elohim and observe it.” What “Word” is He talking about? The Words given by His Father in the Torah, Writings and Prophets, commonly known as the “Old Testament”. Therefore, according to our Messiah, these are the same words that we are to obey.
The Spirit of Wisdom will always lead us away from mingled associations & worship and to the ways of YHVH!!!
Have a blessed and shalom filled day!!
